Flooding is rare in the UAE, but when heavy rain hits, underground car parks and low streets can fill with water within hours. A car that has been sitting in water can look fine on the outside and still have serious hidden damage. Here's what to do straight away and how to decide between repairing and selling.

What to do first

  1. Don't start the engine. If water got into the engine, cranking it can pull water into the cylinders and cause much bigger damage.
  2. Take photos. Photograph the car where it is, including the waterline on the body and inside the cabin. These help with insurance and with getting an accurate offer.
  3. Disconnect the battery if it's safe. This reduces the risk of electrical shorts.
  4. Contact your insurer. Report the damage as soon as you can.

How to tell how bad the damage is

The water level matters most:

  • Below the doors: often limited to brakes, wheel bearings and underbody parts.
  • Above the floor: carpets, seat motors, wiring and control modules under the seats are at risk. Damp interiors can also develop mould and smell.
  • Up to the dashboard or engine air intake: engine, gearbox and most electronics may be affected. This is the most expensive level of damage.

Warning signs that appear later include warning lights, windows or locks that stop working, a musty smell, fogged headlights and rust starting on bolts and seat rails.

Insurance basics

Comprehensive policies often cover flood damage, while third-party-only policies usually don't. Check your policy wording and speak to your insurer. If the insurer declares the car a total loss, you may be able to keep the car and sell it yourself, depending on the settlement. Ask them clearly what your options are.

Repair or sell? How to decide

  • Repair if the water stayed low, the engine wasn't affected and the quote is well below the car's value.
  • Sell if the water reached the engine or dashboard, the repair quote is close to the car's value, or the car is older and electrical faults are likely to keep coming back.

Electrical problems from flooding can appear weeks or months later, so a car that seems fixed may keep costing money. Many owners choose to sell rather than keep paying for repairs.

Selling a flood damaged car

We buy flood damaged cars in any condition and collect them for free, including from basements once they're accessible. Send photos of the car and the waterline on WhatsApp and we'll give you a fixed price. See our flood damaged car service, or read what decides a scrap car's value.

Frequently asked questions

Should I start my car after a flood?

No. Starting a flooded engine can pull water into the cylinders and cause major damage. Get it checked or sell it as it is.

Does car insurance cover flood damage in the UAE?

Comprehensive policies often do, third-party-only policies usually don't. Check your policy and speak to your insurer.

Is it worth repairing a flood damaged car?

If water stayed low and the engine wasn't affected, often yes. If water reached the engine or dashboard, repairs are usually expensive and faults can keep coming back.

Will you buy a car that was in a flooded basement?

Yes. We collect from basements once they're accessible and buy flood damaged cars in any condition.

What photos should I send for a price?

All four sides, the interior, the engine bay and the waterline on the body and inside the cabin.
