Selling a scrap car isn't finished when the tow truck drives away. If the car's registration is still linked to you, you can keep receiving fines, notices or renewal reminders for a car you no longer own. Cancelling the registration, often called de-registration, closes that link. This guide explains the general process in Dubai and what to sort out first.

RTA procedures, channels and fees can change. Always check the current requirements on the RTA website or app before you start. If you sell to us, message us first and we'll tell you how the registration is handled for your car.

Why cancelling the registration matters

  • No more fines in your name. A car that's still registered to you is still your responsibility on paper.
  • Clean records. An open registration can complicate registering a new car or closing your file if you leave the UAE.
  • Insurance and Salik. Closing the registration is the right moment to stop insurance and remove your Salik tag.

What to clear before cancelling

  1. Traffic and parking fines. Check them on the RTA or Dubai Police app. Outstanding fines usually have to be paid before the file can be closed.
  2. Bank loan. If the car is financed, the loan must be settled and the bank's mortgage on the vehicle released. See our guide on selling a car with a bank loan.
  3. Salik. Remove the tag and update your Salik account.

The general steps

  1. Agree who handles it. When you sell for scrap, ask your buyer whether they complete the de-registration or whether you need to. Get the answer before the car is collected.
  2. Prepare documents. Usually the owner's Emirates ID, the registration card (Mulkiya) and the number plates. For company cars, the company's documents.
  3. Return the plates. Plates are normally handed back as part of the process unless you keep them for another car.
  4. Complete the request with the RTA. Through an RTA channel or an approved centre, depending on what's currently available.
  5. Keep the confirmation. Save the certificate or receipt showing the vehicle is no longer registered to you.

What if the registration has already expired?

An expired Mulkiya doesn't stop you from selling a scrap car, but the file is still open in your name. Fines may have built up while the car sat unused. Check them first, then follow the same steps. See selling a car with expired registration.

What if you're outside the UAE?

You can authorise someone in the UAE to act for you, usually with a power of attorney. We help owners abroad arrange this. See selling your car from abroad.

After the sale: a quick checklist

  • Registration cancelled and confirmation saved
  • Insurance cancelled (you may be due a partial refund)
  • Salik tag removed and account updated
  • Copies of the sale paperwork kept safely

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to cancel my car registration when I scrap my car?

Yes. The registration should no longer be linked to you once the car is scrapped, so you don't receive fines or notices for it.

Who cancels the registration, me or the buyer?

It depends on the buyer. Ask before the car is collected and get it confirmed. If you sell to us, we'll tell you exactly how it's handled for your car.

Do I have to pay fines before cancelling?

Usually outstanding fines must be cleared first. Check them on the RTA or Dubai Police app.

Can I cancel the registration if the car still has a loan?

The bank loan must be settled and the bank's mortgage released first.

Can someone else do it if I'm abroad?

Usually yes, with proper authorisation such as a power of attorney. We help owners abroad arrange this.
